Eddie Bauer | Black People Surf?
Black people are not the first that come to mind when you think of surfing. That's exactly why this film needed to exist.
I was approached to co-direct a documentary focused on the renaissance of Black surf culture in Southern California. Black People Surf? follows the founders, instructors, and surfers committed to build a more inclusive community through their collectives and nonprofit efforts. Eddie Bauer wanted to tell a story about diversity in the outdoors. We made sure it felt earned rather than performed.
I co-directed, edited, and colored this important project.
150,000 combined impressions. Selected by six film festivals. Three awards. But more than any of that, it was a story that needed to be told.
